Pre-K 3 - 1st Grade

Early Learning Center

Children have limitless potential. Our earliest learners develop a love of learning and enhance their ability to care — to care for truth and learning; to care for their health and well-being; to care for others, for the world around them, for nature, and for the good that they can bring. Joyous exploration, creative expression, personalized pathways, immersive language learning, and community contribution are the key features of our Early Learning program.

Essential Practices

Reggio

Reggio-Inspired

For more than fifty years, the preschools of Reggio Emilia, Italy have inspired educators throughout the world for their focus on the infinite capabilities of young children by providing them with myriad ways to learn through deep exploration, creativity, and communication. At Whittle, our approach is Reggio-inspired throughout our design and our core beliefs:

  • Children are infinitely capable.

  • Children require multiple ways of engaging and demonstrating learning.

  • Children deserve the rights and responsibilities accordant to them as engaged citizens of their communities.

  • Teachers must be researchers.

  • Learning is an active and social endeavor.

  • Documentation is a critical piece of the learning process.

EMERGENT CUrRICULUM

Emergent curriculum is a philosophy of teaching and way of planning curriculum that focuses on being responsive to children’s interests to create meaningful learning experiences in and beyond the classroom.

This philosophy prioritizes active participation by teachers and students in relationship building, flexible and adaptable methods of inquiry, and play-based learning.

Immersive Language Study

Immersive language study is an essential part of Early Learning at Whittle. Overall, our schedule enables approximately 50% of the day in English and 50% in Chinese. Out approach to teaching Chinese emphasizes three keys to success.

3 Keys to Language Learning:

  • Building RELATIONSHIPS with the students

  • Creating JOY through a variety of language experiences

  • Building CONFIDENCE and generating MOTIVATION

Deep Family Partnership

Families are close partners. We engage families as partners to develop joyous learning at school and at home, and to help strengthen the family’s network of support for life-long learning and health.  Weekly electronic newsletters provide photos, videos, and detailed descriptions to inspire families to continue Whittle-inspired exploration and learning at home.  Bi-monthly family networking and education opportunities include such topics as immersive language learning, positive parenting, and understanding your child’s development.  We engage families in our project- based learning in the classroom—joining us as guest experts, sharing a cultural tradition or reading us a favorite book.  We are on this exciting educational journey together—and know that through deep partnership—we will weather the challenging times together and ensure the greatest possible growth and joy for your child and family.

 X-Day

One day a week, “X-Day” is a concentrated extension of the exploratory learning we engage in during the rest of the week. Dynamic and powerful experiences in the city and outside the classroom inspire, educate, and empower students to be responsible and empathetic members of both their local and global communities, to engage thoughtfully with real-world issues, and to develop the skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to solving the greatest challenges of our time—in short, to become engaged global citizens. X-Days inspire the researchers, the adventure seekers, the quiet independent observers, the collaborators, the concerned citizens... to make meaning of in-depth explorations of places like Rock Creek Park where students will study water—where it comes from, where it goes, and connect it to the UN Sustainability Goal #6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Each experiential day is planned with the students and relates to their passions as well as the themes and competencies we are pursuing. Students consider how they are part of their community and environment and how they can authentically give back to it.

As a part of our Restaurant Research Project, our Kindergarten class researched different types of restaurants nearby campus as part of an X-Day. We visited Sushi Para, Pho 14, and Laliguras Indian Nepali Bistro. We tasted different types of food (Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Italian, Indian, etc.), and researched different types of seating and spaces. These experiences informed the "K-Cafe", a restaurant in the classroom that students made themselves.
