Boarding

Boarding lies at the heart of some of the world’s greatest schools. There is good reason for this: the opportunity to live in a learning community, to form lasting friendships, and to develop confidence and independence when away from home can be life changing. Whittle School & Studios is reinventing education for a new generation of boys and girls, including in our approach to residential life, which is experiential, vivid, fun, and caring. Our boarders build memories, learn from the vibrant city in which they live, and generate a sense of family that will stay with them for life. We invite you to join this truly global, residential Whittle community.

 A Capital Boarding Experience

Our Home in Washington, DC

We chose Washington, DC as the location for our first North American campus because of its dynamic and international culture as well as its global significance across the spheres of government, diplomacy, advocacy, activism, politics, and law. With a curriculum oriented around the exploration of real-world problems, our DC campus provides students with the opportunity to connect with the institutions addressing these issues at the highest level.

Located in Van Ness, only minutes away from the DC Metro and in the heart of DC's diplomatic district, our DC campus sits on thirteen acres on International Drive. Our central location offers students abundant access to all that Washington has to offer, including museums, markets, restaurants, readings, shows, shops, and so much more.

A Place To Grow

Residential Life

At the center of the Whittle boarding experience is a supportive community, where enduring bonds are forged between our students, faculty, and other members of our campus — while also creating connections throughout the city of Washington, DC.

Our state-of-the-art boarding facilities have been constructed using the same architectural philosophies that inspired our whole campus: an emphasis on abundant natural light, an understanding of the modern student, and a focus on spaces that build community and forge connections.

 In Their Own Words

Student Voices

"I’ve lived in the same town in the same place for all my life, so leaving my family and home and living with strangers seemed terrifying and impossible. But my incredibly supportive friends and community here have made my time away from home so fun and happy that I look forward to every time I come back to school."

- JiaJia Fu, 9th Grade

“The boarders at Whittle really are a family away from family. There are always exciting conversations to have. I am very glad I chose Whittle — there is nothing about the community I would change.”

- Padraic Wasinger, 9th Grade

“The energy of the school is always really pleasant. We get that from our teachers, we get that from our friends — from all those people — which is really cool."

– MELIYAH EVANS, 9th GraDe

“On the weekends, we'll go to Union Market and try new food and explore — or, like this weekend, we're going to hot pot to celebrate Chinese New Year."

- Grant Baxter, 10th Grade

Study Abroad

Global Exchange

It is one of Whittle School & Studios highest and most valued aims to facilitate cross-cultural opportunities for our students to spend time studying at other campuses, exploring different cultures and exciting locales, as well as engaging with their global school community around the world. In our founding year, we launched the Cities Experience Program, which enabled to students to spend time studying in both China and the United States. As our school continues to grow, we look forward to enabling more opportunities for our students to explore their world within our global community.

City Experience Program

The Whittle School & Studios City Experience Program is like no other “abroad program.” Most academic travel programs with which you may be familiar are organized around passively seeing sights and receiving information, as tourists, in museums or from tour guides; In the CEP, you actively engage with the cities we visit, bringing questions from your classroom work out into the city to collect meaningful data, answer important questions and engage relevant problems. You become urban sociologists, anthropologists, scientific researchers, historians, artists, and policymakers.
