“I think Whittle does a fantastic job at teaching students why they should believe in a cause. [My peer] and I talked today about how many kids our age decide they agree with a social justice issue because it sounds like they should agree with it and that people are turning into “robots.” At Whittle, I am challenged in a way that’s almost like, “that’s great that you agree with this issue but tell me why you agree with it.” There is something so validating about being able to stick up for a cause and understand why you are doing it. ”
“I love how the Whittle learning community teaches our little scholars how to create and problem solve!”
“I really enjoy Spanish class because instead of sitting down and memorizing lists of different conjugations, we learn how to really apply the language to things that will be useful later in life. For example, we write speeches, articles, make podcasts, informational posters, presentations, and much more. This way of teaching makes learning a language much stickier and you see yourself making progress ten times faster than the traditional way of teaching a language that includes memorizing vocabulary flash cards. ”
“Our son has been talking about his project every day. “I’m so excited for Whittle School,” he says each morning. ”
“ One thing that made my Whittle experience so incredible in the first year was the school’s mission to create global citizens; to build members of society who are globally aware and have empathy and understanding for other places and cultures. In only one year I have felt my view of the world expand so much because I am able to interact with students and teachers with global backgrounds, study history and STEM through an international lens, and learn a foreign language through looking at culture and history, not just vocab words and grammar tenses. ”
“ Learning Spanish at Whittle has greatly helped my communication, confidence, and understanding of the Spanish language as well as how it applies to countless aspects of the world. Every class is a new opportunity to explore Spanish at its core and focus on your interests. During each trimester, you take part in project-based learning where, you the student, are in control. With every project, whether it is on the natural world or Latino/Spanish culture, you get to choose your topic and how you want to display it. Personally, choosing my topic and presentation allows me to follow my path as a learner and then present my project with passion. Whittle truly individualizes Spanish for each student and pushes students to think beyond technical aspects to discover real-world applications. ”
“ What drew me to Whittle were the endless possibilities. There was no wall stopping you from pursuing an idea. Students had the opportunity to pursue what they were passionate about, in collaboration with teachers and staff; and most amazingly, change the way “school” was designed.”
“I love our projects. The way we do our projects is so systematic but at the same time, you find joy and happiness. It’s not just exercises, exercises, then tests. Everything you do adds up and the progression is amazing because you get to carry it through from one subject to another. I’m honestly blown away by the amount of hard work it takes teachers to find something that is interesting and teaches us something. It is amazing, the experience in general.”
